uPVC and uPVC/Aluminium door and window frames are popular for their energy efficiency, thermal insulation and soundproofing qualities. But to maximize their longevity and performance, regular cleaning and maintenance are both essential.

Materials: the benefits of uPVC and uPVC/Aluminium

uPVC is a highly versatile material, ideal for durable window and door frames. It withstands rain, wind, moisture and UV exposure, making it resistant to corrosion and wear, even in tough climates.

Moreover, uPVC/Aluminium casings combine the benefits of uPVC’s insulation with aluminium’s strength and modern look. The inner uPVC layer provides great thermal and acoustic insulation, while the outer aluminium coating offers enhanced durability and multiple color and finish options for personalization.

Even with these advantages, routine care and maintenance is key to keeping uPVC or uPVC/Aluminium doors and windows in shape. Both materials perform well, but special care ensures they maintain the best appearance and function over time.

How to clean uPVC casements

Over time, uPVC door and window frames can gather dust, grime and residue, which can dull their appearance and functionality. Here are some tips for an effective window cleaning at home, recommended at least every 6 months:

  • Remove dust and surface dirt: use a vacuum or soft brush to reach corners and crevices, such as frame edges and seals.
  • Wash the surface: use a soft sponge with warm water and mild detergent (like dish soap or a vinegar-water mix) to remove stains and residue without damaging the uPVC.
  • Avoid harsh cleaning products: stay away from abrasive cleaners or scrubbing tools, which can scratch or dull the surface. Instead, opt for gentle cleaning tools and products.
  • Don’t forget the seals and movable parts: dirt can accumulate here, affecting the window seals’ tightness and compromising insulation.
  • Rinse and dry accurately: after cleaning, rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth to prevent streaks and water spots.

How to clean aluminium frames

Cleaning aluminium window and door frames follows similar steps to uPVC, but with a few unique considerations; begin by removing dust and dirt with a soft cloth or vacuum.

For the profile, it’s best to use a neutral or metal-safe cleaner, as aluminium can be more reactive to harsh chemicals. Acidic or alkaline cleaners, such as muriatic acid or alkaline detergents, can damage anodized or painted finishes.

After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry immediately with a soft cloth. This step is particularly important for aluminium door and window casings exposed to direct sunlight, as residual water may leave spots.

Specific care tips for doors and windows

Cleaning the frames is just the beginning; depending on their features, doors and windows may need further attention as well.

For entrance doors cleaning the entire uPVC/Aluminium surface is usually enough, following the same guidelines used for frames. For windows and glass doors, however, the glass itself requires regular cleaning at least once a month, using a specific glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth to achieve a streak-free, scratch-free shine.

Once the surfaces are clean, pay attention to seals and grooves. Removing dust and dirt from areas where the frame meets the sash maintains airtightness and preserves thermal and acoustic insulation.

The maintenance of moving parts, like hinges, locks and handles, is also essential; lubricate these components with a silicone-based product every six months to ensure smooth operation and prevent wear.

What to do with mosquito screens and shutters

Mosquito screens and shutters are equally important to maintain, since they tend to collect dust and dirt quicker than doors and windows.

For aluminium shutters, both louvered and rolling ones, start with a soft-bristle brush or vacuum attachment with a narrow nozzle to reach tight spaces and slats, then use a soft cloth with a gentle cleaner to remove dirt.

With mosquito screens, a vacuum with a soft brush attachment effectively removes dust, and afterward, you can wipe down the mesh with a microfiber cloth and mild soapy water, rinsing with clean water and drying carefully.

For a more thorough clean, a steam cleaner can be used, but be cautious not to damage the mesh. It’s also wise to clean the lateral tracks, using a small brush or the narrowest nozzle of the vacuum for any hard-to-reach debris.

Beyond cleaning: door and window maintenance

Regular maintenance of doors and windows is just as essential as cleaning. Hinges, locks, strike plates and rods should be lubricated with acid-free and resin-free oils, such as technical Vaseline or Teflon oil, which protects mechanical parts from wear, friction and rust while ensuring smooth movement.

The maintenance of window seals is also crucial; they play a significant role in insulation. Check annually to ensure they aren’t dry or damaged, replacing them if necessary.

These maintenance steps should be performed at least once a year, or more frequently if you notice difficulty in opening or closing. Following these cleaning and maintenance tips will keep your windows and doors in optimal condition for years to come.
